Bessie & Barnie Sofa Bed

I LOVE Bessie & Barnie Dog Beds. Duke has two of them in the bagel shape and I've been wanting one for Jax, but he isn't a big fan of laying on actual dog beds, so I didn't want to get one and have it sitting around without being used.

Jax does like laying on furniture though- couches, chairs, etc. Bessie & Barnie has a sofa bed option that I thought I would try.

1. It is furniture like- which he enjoys sleeping on and wrestling with his mice in.
2. It would look super cute in the living, so even if he doesn't use it, it will still look nice (FYI: He is currently sleeping on the couch, next to me while I type...)

So far we have had to for 3 days. He has slept in it a handful of times and has played with his mice in it a handful of time.

It terrifies me when I see small dogs sticking their heads out a very open car window or large dogs in the back of pick up trunks. While I know that most dogs have no issues, it makes me sad for those that happen to hit a bump and end up injured or worse.

HH Backer Spring Show

This past weekend I went out to Baltimore to the H.H. Backer Spring Show. It is a trade show where vendors go to showcase their products.

Besides having to stay another night because my flight got delayed it was a good trip.

Below are a sampling of new items that we will soon have at Poochieheaven.

Dog Carriers- We have two options of dog carriers. They are a standard dog carrier in blue and pink along with a wheeled dog carrier for large dogs in black. They are not fancy or expensive carriers, but will be great for airline trips or trips to the vet.

Dog Collars- We ordered new collars from two vendors. One is the common ribbon and nylon collars. We ordered some great novelty prints, so those looking for a cabin themed collar or want to go edgy with skulls, watch our website in the next 2 weeks for them to be added. The other collars we ordered are fabulous leather collars with Swarovski crystals and studs. They are absolutely stunning. They are mostly for large dogs, so those big dogs will be getting some love!

Supplements for Dogs- The more I learn about dog nutrition the more I realize that there are certain dog supplements that will greatly benefit your dog (just like the vitamins you take). Grooming your Long Haired Dog

1. Brush your dog at home every day. Set aside a time each day and make it a routine. Brush your dog for five minutes, this will help to keep mats out. Don't be afraid to trim a small area if it is getting to difficult to groom, it will grow back! Brushing is one of the easiest things you can do to keep your dog's coat in good condition.

2. Feed high quality food. Good coat and skin start from within. If you feed junk, it will look like junk. Another good thing is a fish oil or coconut oil for dogs. This will also help with their skin and coat.

3. When bathing your dog, use a shampoo and conditioner that is made for dogs with long hair. This will help to keep it in pristine shape.

Separation Anxiety and Dog Toys

For some reason, Duke has had some issues with what I think is separation anxiety. He is doing things he has never done in the past- getting into garbages and going to the bathroom in the house. While these things are not the end of the world, I wonder- what happened to my dog?

The more I thought about it the more I thought that maybe it is a form of separation anxiety. That instead of eating the carpet or destroying the table, he was destroying and eating the garbage. It seems to be the worst right when we leave -I once took a shower and didn't let him into the adjoining room, and he got into the garbage- and then it it over.

So what I thought is that I needed something (and something good) to distract him for the first 5 minutes when I leave. He is not a big chewer, so bully sticks, himalayan chews, deer antler chews, etc where not going to work. I have down the kong filled with frozen peanut butter before, but I usually forgot to fill it back up and the soft peanut butter wasn't going to work. So I was stuck. I thought about giving him a Nina Ottosson dog toy, but since he really isn't into a lot of dog treats and food, I wasn't sure if that was going to work.

I decided that I had to try once since there wasn't much else I could do. I finally brought one home and set it up. Of course I had to put really good treats in there. The first time I gave it to him, he looked at it, smelled it, licked it a few times and went to go find his ball. I thought, see I knew he wouldn't like it. But then Jax thought it was pretty neat and started using it, of course then Duke thought it was pretty neat and was able to get it to work after a few times.

Well, not after many uses, it seems to have done its job. When I left his morning, instead of trying to stop me from getting out of the dog and freaking out that I was leaving him behind, he was upstairs trying to get the treats out of the toy. So HOPEFULLY, this will be it. He can forget that I am leaving, get his treats, and then lay down and relax.

So, if you are looking for dog toys to help withe separation anxiety, I would highly recommend the Nina Ottosson Dog Toys.

At Poochieheaven we have gotten many request for clothes for huge dogs. These are hard to come by, but many large dogs have thin fur and need an extra layer during the cold winter months.

Here are a few helpful tips when it comes to potty your new puppy or dog.- Buy a dog crate. This is by far the number one thing that you can do to help potty train your dog. Dogs do not like to soil their "home". A dog's crate will soon become their home and they will hold their bladder until they are let you. One piece of advice though is make sure that you get a crate that is the correct size. If you get one too large, the dog will use one area as their sleeping area and one area as their potty area. When you are not home or can't wait them, put them in the crate. United Airlines: Prior arrangements are needed. Extra fee charged. Dogs, cats, & birds are allowed. Maximum carrier dimension: 17”L x 10”W x 10”H. Health certificate needed.

US Airways: Prior arrangements are needed. Extra fee charged. Dogs, cats, & birds are allowed. Health certificate required. Maximum carrier dimension- 17”L x 16”W x 10”H (soft sided) & 17”L x 16”W x 8”H (hard sided)

Continental Airlines: Dogs, cats, rabbits, & birds allowed. Extra fee charged. Maximum carrier dimension- 16”L x 12”W x 8.75”H. Health certificate required.

Mom got a sewing machine last week. She finally got around to making us something. It is just a simple bandana, but she tells me she is "learning". I got a cool skull one and Jax got a picnic one (dad's words).

Once she decides to download all her photos, she said she would post pictures.

I also overhead that I get to go for a walk by the river again tomorrow!

Nice Long Walk

Mom and Dad decided to go for a walk today (with me of course!). They still haven't explored all the trails and walkways by the new house. Tonight they decided to go on a walk that went down by the river. They didn't know where they were going but it was fun!

We finally found our way back home, but it was a looonnnggg walk---1 hour and 45 minutes.

I, who dislikes water, actually went in. Some areas it was actually touching my belly, but I didn't care.

They also let me walk off leash between them on the trail in the woods. I'm naughty off leash so this doesn't happen very much!

It was a great walk and can't wait to walk the other trails in the woods!

So Mom finally got pictures uploaded. So this post is from the 4th of July.

I am scared of fireworks, and the local doggie daycare emBARK (formally the Beastro) holds a 4th of July party for all the doggies that are scared of fireworks.

I went there for about 5 hours that night, during the time when the scary fireworks were going off. I had so much fun because it has been a while since I've been there.

Here is picture of me when we got back to Grandma and Grandpa's. I was super tired and the last lingering fireworks didn't even bother me!

We have had lots of visitors (human) recently. Mom's little sisters and friends were here for a week and how dad's little brother is here for the weekend.

I (Duke) enjoyed all the extra attention and treats I got. While Jax enjoyed it but got a little scared. I also overheard the humans saying a few times that Jax was meowing and walking all over them when they slept. Naughty Cat.

I Like Bugs

We (Duke & I) were back at the grandparent's this weekend for the holiday. On Sunday, I was minding my own business and then a bug strolled in my way. Of course, I had to play with it and try to eat it. Duke, being lazy, had no idea what was happening.

My Pet Peeves

Overall, Duke is a very good dog. But there are a few things about him that just piss me off.

Last night we went for a short bike ride--about 20 minutes or so. When we got home, guess who had gotten into the kitchen garbage? You guessed right. Duke. He loves garbages, not just kitchen garbages with nasty old food, but any garbage. We have to have all garbage cans covered so he can't get into them. I don't know how to stop this. I've always read and heard that yelling at a dog after they did it does no good because they don't understand the connection, given I still yell, but oh well.

Otherthing that makes me mad is that he whines. He is a big baby and when he doesn't like something he whines. Grrr....

Jax's New Toys

I stopped by a garage sale on Thursday as found Jax a new toy! I've always thought about getting Jax one of these, but was never sure if he would actually use it. I didn't want to spend that much money for something he would not use. Well I got this for a good deal!

True Colors Thursday- Maroon

Ants

We had an invasion of ants in the laundry room!

I first noticed them two days ago and finally got time to get to the store today to get some ant killer. Not a lot of things bother me, but all these tiny ants crawling all over, really gross me out!

What does this mean for Jax and Duke? All their food, water, and Jax's litter box had to find a new home for a few days while the ant killer does its work. Right now it is all just sitting in the common area right outside the laundry room. Jax hasn't had any problems finding the litter box, so that is good!

Weekend Catch Up

Jax got a new carrier this weekend! He doesn't ride very well in a car and the carrier he had he would rub his nose up against it and it would start to bleed. This new cat carrier is so much cuter and now he can't make his nose bleed. He still meows the entire time, but at least he doesn't look awful when he gets out!

We went back to my parents for the weekend and he had a great time wrestling with one of my parent's cats. He weighs about 3 times less, but doesn't care and always goes back for more!

Duke had a great weekend too. He always gets spoiled whenever we go back to my parents. There are some days, I think he favors my dad over me, but then again, he gets whatever he wants with my dad.

Duke also got a new bed this weekend. Since moving, we needed a bed for upstairs and a bed for downstairs in the bedroom. I don't have a picture, but you can see his new large dog bed here.

On Monday, it was very hot and muggy here. We took him down to the river to play with his wubba dog toy some. He is NOT a swimmer at all. I wish I had a camera. Most of the water was maybe 6 inches deep, but a few places it was like 2-3 feet. We tried throwing the wubba in there a few times and he would just look at it and try to go where it was shallow to get it. He got better as the time went on, I think he really enjoyed it and was tired when we got home! The picture of him is when he was still a little wet and tired!

Bats and Balls

Bats, as in the flying mammals that you only see at night, not baseball bats.

I was sitting in the living room today and saw this thing flying around. After seeing it land a few times, I realized it was a bat. I got a few (blurry) pictures of it while it decided to land right by the back door. Luckily, Jax was in another window as I don't think I'd want him chasing this!

This is the best picture I could get, I didn't feel like sticking my head out the screen door. Duke was right next to me watching and probably wondering what this odd creature was.

Duke favorite toy of all time is tennis balls. But since he can get very annoying with tennis balls, we graduate to other types of balls, which he is not quite as obsessed with. Today, while at Menards, my boyfriend had to get him a toy. Since Duke is very good at playing soccer- one day I'll post a video- he got him this soccer ball. This pose is how he spent most of the night.

Who is Jax?

Jax is a Siamese/Himalayan/ragdoll/something mix. He was adopted in March '09 from Animal Rescue and Farm Sanctuary. He thought he was 6 months old then.

He loves the little fake rattle mice and is definitely inherited the talking of a Siamese. He also loves to eat and is very loving in the mornings.

Who is Duke?

Duke is a 4 year old long haired German Shepherd. He was purchased from a breeder from the German Shepherd Dog Club of Minneapolis and St. Paul in May of 2005.

He LOVES tennis balls and balls of all kind. He really dislikes food and while weighing in at 100lbs, he still looks skinny.

I would not consider him your typical German shepherd, he is mildly reserved with strangers and he gets along good with dogs.

He is overall a great dog!
